Herons Fall to Central Maine in Doubleheader Opener

Auburn, ME – The Great Bay Community College Herons dropped game one of Sunday's doubleheader against the Central Maine Community College Mustangs, falling 9–3 on September 14th at CMCC.

Great Bay struck early, plating a run in the first when Brayden Nobles singled to right to drive in Manny Sanchez. The Herons added another in the second on an RBI single by Pavel Miller, scoring Mikey Giovanditto, and later pushed across a seventh-inning run when Daniel Ciriello scored on a double-play ball.

Despite the early momentum, Central Maine's offense proved too strong. The Mustangs answered in the first with an RBI double from T.J. Kramarz, then added a sacrifice fly by Dawson Babineau in the second. A two-run double by Brendan Mahaney in the third gave CMCC the lead for good.

The decisive blow came in the fifth inning, when the Mustangs erupted for five runs, highlighted by RBI hits from Garren Post, Luc Oishi, and a two-run triple from Lee Robertson. Central Maine finished with 10 hits and nine RBIs, while also stealing nine bases to pressure the Herons defensively.

On the mound, JJ Francis (0–1) took the loss for Great Bay, allowing four runs over four innings with one strikeout. Hayden Hundley came on in relief but was tagged for five runs across two innings.

Offensively, Great Bay collected seven hits, led by Nobles (2-for-2, RBI) and Miller (2-for-3, RBI). Giovanditto also reached twice and scored a run. Defensively, the Herons were clean in the field with no errors.

Central Maine's bullpen was sharp, as Brady Vincent (1–0) earned the win with two hitless innings of relief, and Gwilym Cook closed the final two innings while striking out three.

With the loss, the Herons move to 0–3 on the young season.  

 

Herons Drop Game Two to Central Maine, 11–1

The Great Bay Community College Herons were unable to build on their early momentum and fell 11–1 to Central Maine CC in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Great Bay struck first in the top of the second inning when Rhett Dyer singled to left field, bringing home Mikey Giovanditto for a 1–0 lead. Despite putting seven hits on the board, the Herons couldn't capitalize on further opportunities, stranding five runners on base.

Central Maine answered quickly, plating three runs in the bottom of the third and steadily pulling away. A fifth-inning sacrifice fly from T.J. Kramarz extended the Mustangs' lead, and they broke the game open in the sixth with seven runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from catcher Matthew MacLeod and a two-RBI triple from Caleb Oickle.

For Great Bay, Pavel Miller collected two hits, while Dyer and Giovanditto each contributed offensively with a hit and a run scored. On the mound, starter Ethan Gamez battled through five innings, striking out six while allowing just two earned runs.

Central Maine's starter, Mathew Charrette, earned the win with a complete-game performance, scattering seven hits and striking out five.

With the loss, the Herons move to 0–2 on the young season, while Central Maine improves to 2–0. Great Bay will look to regroup when they return home for their next matchup.
